About this book
Give your fourth grader the confidence to succeed on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) Science test.
This book contains five full-length practice tests — 150 questions in all — aligned to the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science and built to match the format, difficulty, and content of the real Grade 4 TCAP Science test.
Take a look inside
About the question count: Tennessee scores 25 to 26 questions on a Grade 4 Science form, but your child will see about 30.
- Field-test items: the extras are field-test questions, items the state is trying out for future exams. They look exactly like every other question and do not count toward your child’s score, and students are never told which is which, so on test day every question has to be worked with full focus.
- Each practice test here: each test runs that same full length, so a practice sitting matches the real one.
- Length: all 30 questions in this book are scored, and every one is explained.
On test day: Grade 4 TCAP Science is one session of about 60 minutes, taken on paper with no calculator.
What’s inside
- 5 complete 30-question practice tests (150 questions total)
- Built the way TCAP Science is actually written: nearly every question rests on a diagram, map, graph, or data table that must be read first
- Multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in the proportions the state’s released items show, with every multiple-select question saying how many answers to choose
- Detailed explanations for every question, giving the reasoning and not just the letter, each closing with a short Tip, Check, or Big idea
- The full text of the correct answer printed beside its letter, so scoring never means flipping back
- Question types varied across all five tests: reading a model, critiquing one, weighing two students’ competing claims, choosing which trials make a fair test, predicting what comes next
- Every figure drawn in black and white, so the printed page matches what your child studies from
- A parent letter with test-taking tips, plus a Grade 4 Science Study Reference
- A quick-reference answer key covering all five tests
Topics covered
- Speed, energy, and collisions, and what a dent or crater reveals about the energy that arrived
- Stored energy put to use: springs, batteries, fuels, and moving air turned into motion, sound, and light
- Waves, light, and seeing, including why an object cannot reflect a color that is not shining on it
- Sending information as a pattern, and how lenses extend what the eye can see
- Food webs, and reading arrows from the living thing eaten toward the one eating it
- Producers, consumers, and decomposers, and how a decomposer closes the loop
- What happens when a species is added to or removed from an ecosystem
- How living things respond when their environment changes, and how they reshape their own region
- Weathering, erosion, and deposition: freeze and thaw, wind-blown sand, roots, deltas, and valleys
- Rock layers and fossils as a record of environments that no longer exist
- Reading maps for patterns in mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes, and ocean trenches
- Renewable and nonrenewable resources, and how people change the land and water
- Testing design solutions against every requirement they must meet
Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by experienced educators working from Tennessee’s own TCAP blueprints and released items
