This book holds four flashcard decks: 140 cards written to the fifteen Grade 4 and Grade 5 standards the test draws on, with all 57 of their key ideas covered. Every card is a new item, not a reprint of the Smart Stars Virginia SOL Grade 5 Science practice-test book; the two are built to work together. Read the front, answer in your head, then turn the page to flip it. (A real form shows 50 questions, 40 of them scored, in four equal reporting categories of 10; half the test is Grade 4 science. It is untimed, and Virginia scores it from 0 to 600. The cards follow the same split: 35 in each category.)

What’s inside
- Four color-coded decks of 35 cards each: Like Test Day (test-style questions), Key Concepts (one science idea per card), Vocabulary (the terms the test uses), and Trouble Spots (the ideas Virginia’s standards single out as easy to confuse)
- Like Test Day cards written the way the SOL asks them, with figures, tables, and data
- Key Concepts cards that ask your child to explain an idea, then show the principle and one worked example
- Vocabulary cards that define each term in the language the test uses
- Trouble Spots cards whose wrong choices are the exact mix-ups students make
- The answer on the very next page: the correct answer, a worked explanation, and a Tip that names the mistake behind the wrong choices
- The Virginia standard each card tests, printed on the back word for word, so a parent sees which standard a missed card belongs to
- Drawings on the answer pages of the Vocabulary and Key Concepts decks wherever a picture explains the idea
- Each deck in its own color on every page; the amber box is always a Tip
- A letter to families on how the test is built and scored, with test-taking tips
- A Study Reference that prints all fifteen standards and their key ideas
- A Quick Answer Key for the two question decks

Topics covered
- Forms of energy, transformations, and conservation
- Force, mass, kinetic energy, collisions, and friction
- Conductors, closed circuits, static electricity, and electromagnets
- How sound is produced and carried
- How visible light behaves: reflection, refraction, and the spectrum
- Atoms, mixtures, and the phases of matter
- Plant and animal structures for energy and offspring
- Populations, communities, food webs, and classification
- Weather records, climate, and extreme events
- The planets, and the Earth, moon, and sun
- The ocean floor, ocean water, and ocean life
- Virginia’s watersheds and natural resources
- Weathering, erosion, plate tectonics, and the rock cycle
- Renewable and nonrenewable energy resources

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by educators who study Virginia’s test blueprint, curriculum framework, and performance level descriptors
- Every card names its standard, so study time goes to the standards a student is actually missing
- Explanations teach the “why,” so students learn from every card, even the ones they got right
- Four ways to study the same standards: answering, explaining, defining, and untangling confusable ideas

How to use this book
Work through one deck in order the first time; after that, jump to any deck from the table of contents. Answer before turning the page, then read the back even when you were right. Note the category and standard on every card you miss; the ones that keep showing up are what to review before test day. Save Trouble Spots for last.

The four decks
- Like Test Day (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question written to the Grade 5 Science Standards of Learning (SOL) test.
- Key Concepts (35 cards): Each card asks you to explain one science idea from the Grade 5 Science SOL test.
- Vocabulary (35 cards): Each card shows one science term that appears on the Grade 5 Science SOL test.
- Trouble Spots (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question built around an idea that Virginia’s science standards and their curriculum framework single out as easy to confuse.
How the cards work
Read the front of a card, answer it in your head, then turn the page to flip it. The answer card shows the correct answer, a worked explanation, a Tip naming the mistake behind the wrong choices, and the exact Virginia standard the card tests.
Color code. Each deck has its own color on every card, so you always know which deck you are in. The amber box is always a Tip.
Pair it with the practice tests
Virginia SOL Grade 5 Science Practice Tests
Work through full-length practice tests in the same test format, then use these cards to review what each test turns up.
