This book holds four flashcard decks: 140 cards written to the 25 benchmark groupings of Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) for Science that the Grade 5 test covers, including the grade 3 and grade 4 benchmarks it also tests. Every card is a new item, not a reprint of the Smart Stars practice-test book. Read the front, answer in your head, then turn the page to flip it. (The real test is about 44 scored four-choice questions in one 160-minute session. Earth and Space Science and Physical Science each carry 29 percent, Life Science 25 and Nature of Science 17; the cards follow the same split: 42, 38, 36, and 24.)

What’s inside
- Four color-coded decks of 35 cards each: Like Test Day (test-style questions), Key Concepts (one science idea per card), Vocabulary (the terms the test uses), and Trouble Spots (the benchmarks Florida students missed most on the 2025 released test)
- Like Test Day cards written the way the test asks them: four-choice multiple choice, with drawings, tables, and data (90 drawings in the book)
- Key Concepts cards that ask your child to explain an idea, then show the principle and one worked example
- Vocabulary cards that define each term in the language the test uses
- Trouble Spots cards whose wrong choices are the mix-ups students make
- The answer on the very next page: the correct answer, a worked explanation in plain language, and a Tip that names the mistake behind the wrong choices
- The Florida benchmark each card tests, printed on the back word for word, so a parent sees which standard a missed card belongs to
- Each deck in its own color on every page; the amber box is always a Tip
- A letter to families on how the test is built and scored, with test-taking tips
- A Study Reference that prints all 25 benchmark groupings and the benchmarks each one also tests
- A Quick Answer Key for the two question decks

Topics covered
- Planning an investigation: variables, control groups, and what makes an experiment
- Observation versus inference, opinion versus verified observation, and evidence
- The Sun as a star, galaxies, and the objects of the Solar System
- Earth’s rotation and revolution, star patterns, and the phases of the Moon
- Minerals and their properties, the three kinds of rock, and Florida’s resources
- Weathering versus erosion, the water cycle, weather measurements, and climate
- Solids, liquids, and gases; mass and volume; mixtures and dissolving
- Physical and chemical changes, and how temperature affects them
- Forms of energy, energy transformations, heat, circuits, and static electricity
- Forces, gravity, balanced forces, mass, and motion
- Plant structures, human organs, classifying animals and plants, and life cycles
- Adaptations, inherited and learned behaviors, seasons, and food chains

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by experienced educators who study Florida’s test item specifications, test design summary, and released test
- Every card names its benchmark, so study time goes to the standards a student is actually missing
- Four ways to study the same 25 groupings instead of one worksheet format repeated
- All 140 cards are original items, never repeated from the practice-test book

How to use this book
Work through one deck in order the first time; after that, jump to any deck from the table of contents. Answer before turning the page, then read the back even when you were right. Start with Like Test Day and save Trouble Spots for last; expect those to feel a little harder. Ten to fifteen cards a day over several weeks beats one long sitting.

The four decks
- Like Test Day (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question written to the Grade 5 Florida Statewide Science Assessment.
- Key Concepts (35 cards): Each card asks you to explain one science idea from the Grade 5 Florida Statewide Science Assessment.
- Vocabulary (35 cards): Each card shows one science term that appears on the Grade 5 Florida Statewide Science Assessment.
- Trouble Spots (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question built around a benchmark Florida students missed most often on the 2025 released Grade 5 Science test, or an idea the state’s item specifications flag as easy to confuse.
How the cards work
Read the front of a card, answer it in your head, then turn the page to flip it. The answer card shows the correct answer, a worked explanation, a Tip naming the mistake behind the wrong choices, and the exact Florida benchmark the card tests.
Color code. Each deck has its own color on every card, so you always know which deck you are in. The amber box is always a Tip.
Pair it with the practice tests

Work through full-length practice tests in the same test format, then use these cards to review what each test turns up.
