The MCA is given to Minnesota public-school students each spring in Grades 3-8 (and again in Grade 11). It is a program of the Minnesota Department of Education and is delivered by Pearson. Most students take the Grade 4 math test online as a computer-adaptive test: it opens with a no-calculator section and then allows a four-function calculator for the remaining sections, and it mixes multiple-choice questions with technology-enhanced items. The online test scores 42 questions and also slips in a few unscored “field-test” questions that look exactly like the rest, so each practice test here follows the same shape: 46 questions per test: 42 that count plus 4 unmarked field-test-style questions: for 230 questions in all, to build true test-day endurance.

How the MCA is scored:
Topics covered
- Place value for whole numbers and decimals to the thousandths: reading, writing, rounding, comparing, and ordering, including reading and writing decimals in words and symbols
- Multiplication and division facts; multiplying multi-digit numbers and dividing by one- and two-digit numbers; multiplying by 10, 100, and 1,000; estimating products and quotients; and multi-step real-world word problems
- Fractions: building equivalent fractions with models, locating and comparing fractions on a number line (including mixed numbers and improper fractions), and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators
- Decimals: tenths and hundredths, fraction-and-decimal equivalents for halves and fourths, and rounding decimals to the nearest tenth
- Input-output rules and tables (using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and number sentences with multiplication, division, and an unknown
- Classifying and describing triangles (equilateral, right, obtuse, acute) and quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, trapezoid, rhombus, parallelogram, kite), and comparing and classifying angles as acute, right, or obtuse
- Area by counting unit squares and by breaking a figure into rectangles (area is a Grade 4 focus; measuring angles with a protractor is not assessed at Grade 4)
- Transformations (slides, flips, and turns) lines of symmetry, and using them to show that two figures are congruent
- Collecting and reading data on tables, bar graphs, picture graphs, line plots, timelines, and Venn diagrams
- Minnesota reports each student in one of four achievement levels (Does Not Meet, Partially Meets, Meets, or Exceeds the Standards) and a student who reaches Meets or Exceeds is considered proficient
