Give your fourth grader the confidence to succeed on the Nebraska NSCAS Grade 4 Math test.
This Smart Stars practice book provides five full-length, standards-aligned practice tests that mirror the length, item mix, and question types of the real NSCAS spring assessment in Mathematics. Every question was written by experienced educators, reviewed for accuracy, and built around the 2022 Nebraska College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics at Grade 4 (Nebraska’s own standards, not the Common Core) so the topics and emphasis match what Nebraska students actually see.
NSCAS: the Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System: is the test the Nebraska Department of Education gives to every public-school student in Grades 3-8. It is delivered by NWEA, the nonprofit behind MAP Growth, as an untimed, computer-adaptive test, with paper forms available as an accommodation. The spring administration is the one that counts toward grade-level results, reported in three levels: Developing, On Track, and Advanced. The Grade 4 math test uses no calculator, and it blends single-answer multiple choice with multiple-select (“select the two” or “select the three”), type-in answers, and two-part questions that build from Part A to Part B. On the test a student answers about 45 questions, a few of which are unscored field-test questions mixed in invisibly. Each practice test here follows that same shape: 45 questions, including a few unscored field-test-style questions blended in and fully answered: for 225 questions across the book, to build true test-day endurance.
What’s inside
- Five full-length practice tests, with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- Coverage of every Grade 4 math area Nebraska reports (Number, Algebra, Geometry, and Data) weighted toward the Number work (place value, multi-digit computation, and fractions) that carries the most questions, just like the real blueprint
- Field-test-style questions blended invisibly into each test, just like the real NSCAS, and fully answered here so nothing on test day feels unfamiliar
- Practice in every NSCAS item format rendered for paper: multiple choice, multiple select (“select the two” or “select the three”), type-in/fill-in answers, two-part questions, number lines, line plots, protractor-angle figures, and figure-based geometry
- Every explanation walks through the reasoning step by step and ends with a labeled Tip, Check, or Estimate, with a Strategy opening the multi-step questions, so students learn the move, not just the answer
- A Quick Answer Key covering all five tests for fast self-grading
- A family letter, a test-taking tips section, and a Grade 4 math study reference page up front
- No-calculator practice throughout, matching the official NSCAS Grade 3-5 policy
Reference sheet and tools. Unlike Grade 3, the real Grade 4 test provides a reference sheet (the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles and squares plus customary and metric conversion tables) and an on-screen protractor. This book includes a matching Grade 4 study reference sheet, so students practice with exactly the support they will have on test day. A protractor and an inch-and-centimeter ruler are helpful for the angle and measurement questions. No calculator is used at Grade 4.
Topics covered
- Place value through the hundred-thousands, reading, writing, and comparing multi-digit whole numbers up to 1,000,000 in standard and expanded form
- Decimals to the hundredths: reading, writing, comparing and ordering, and decimal notation for fractions with denominators of 10 and 100
- Multi-digit multiplication: up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number, and a two-digit number by a two-digit number
- Division of up to a four-digit number by a one-digit divisor, with and without remainders, and interpreting the remainder in context
- Writing an equation with a variable for an unknown, and solving one- and two-step word problems with all four operations
- Factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers within 100
- Equivalent fractions, and comparing and ordering fractions with unlike numerators or denominators using benchmarks and number lines
- Adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number
- Points, lines, line segments, rays, and parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines; classifying angles as acute, right, or obtuse; classifying two-dimensional shapes; and lines of symmetry
- Measuring angles in whole degrees with a protractor, and finding an unknown angle by adding and subtracting angle measures
- Converting from a larger unit to a smaller one in the customary and metric systems
- Area and perimeter of rectangles in real-world problems
- Building and reading line plots marked in halves, fourths, and eighths, and solving problems by adding and subtracting the fractions shown in the data
Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Educator-authored. Every question is written and reviewed by classroom-experienced educators.
- Mirrors test day. Each practice test matches the official NSCAS shape, item mix, question formats, and no-calculator policy, with field-test questions blended in invisibly just like the real test, and the Grade 4 reference sheet provided up front.
- Built for Nebraska. Aligned to the 2022 Nebraska College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics at Grade 4 (Nebraska’s own standards, not the Common Core) with grade-appropriate real-world contexts and a diverse cast of student names.
- Explanations teach the why. Every Answers and Explanations entry shows the full worked solution, then a labeled closing Tip, Check, or Estimate, with a Strategy opening the multi-step problems, so students learn the reasoning.
- Varied and graduated. Contexts, names, and number choices rotate test-to-test, and the five tests step up in difficulty: the later tests lean on more multi-step, multi-select, and two-part reasoning: so no two feel like the same practice run.
