Hawaii's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, Hawaiʻi's state tests cover English language arts and math every year (the Smarter Balanced Assessments), plus science in grades 5 and 8 (the Hawaiʻi State Science Assessment). The tests are given online, and paper tests are used only for students at sites without internet access. None of the tests is timed, so the times below are the state's estimates for scheduling. Testing takes place in the spring. Students in Hawaiian language immersion programs take the Kaiapuni Assessment of Educational Outcomes (KĀʻEO), given in Hawaiian, in place of these tests.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4 and 5 | Online; two parts: a computer-adaptive test with listening questions, and a performance task in two parts that ends with a full essay | Untimed; about 2 hours 45 minutes in all (45 to 60 minutes for the adaptive test and about 1 hour 45 minutes for the performance task) | Reading, writing, listening, and research |
| Grades 6, 7 and 8 | Online; two parts: a computer-adaptive test with listening questions, and a performance task in two parts that ends with a full essay | Untimed; about 2 hours 20 minutes in all (45 to 60 minutes for the adaptive test and about 1 hour 20 minutes for the performance task) | Reading, writing, listening, and research |
Students write a full essay at every grade. Smarter Balanced recommends giving the adaptive test and the performance task on separate days, and the essay part of the performance task is meant to be finished in one session.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4 and 5 | Online; one computer-adaptive test, with no performance task; no calculator | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes | Concepts and procedures, problem solving with modeling and data analysis, and communicating reasoning |
| Grades 6, 7 and 8 | Online; one computer-adaptive test, with no performance task; on-screen calculator in one section and not in the other; graph paper | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes | Concepts and procedures, problem solving with modeling and data analysis, and communicating reasoning |
The adaptive test adjusts to each student's answers, so the number of questions varies from student to student. Most students finish in one or two sessions.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 5 and 8 | Online; computer-adaptive; question clusters built around a science phenomenon, plus stand-alone questions | Untimed; about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, usually in two sessions of about 45 minutes | Physical science, life science, and earth and space science, in equal parts |
Hawaiʻi's science test is built on the Next Generation Science Standards. The grade 5 test covers the science standards for grades 3 through 5, and the grade 8 test covers grades 6 through 8.
