Kansas Practice Tests
Kansas Practice Books and Flashcards
Kansas's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) covers English language arts and math every year, plus science in grades 5 and 8. Every test is taken on a computer in the Kite Student Portal and is given in two sessions, with multiple-choice and technology-enhanced questions that are all scored by computer. The tests are untimed: the times below are the state's estimates for scheduling, and a student still working on a session may be given more time. Testing takes place in the spring.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3 and 4 | Two sessions; online; multiple-choice and technology-enhanced questions; all computer scored | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Reading literary text (35 to 45%), reading informational text (30 to 40%), writing (20 to 30%) |
| Grade 5 | Two sessions; online; multiple-choice and technology-enhanced questions; all computer scored | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Reading literary text (35 to 45%), reading informational text (35 to 45%), writing (20 to 30%) |
| Grades 6 and 7 | Two sessions; online; multiple-choice and technology-enhanced questions; all computer scored | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Reading informational text (40 to 50%), reading literary text (35 to 45%), writing (15 to 25%) |

The reading questions cover key ideas and details, craft and structure, integration of knowledge and ideas, and language in reading. The writing questions cover text types and purposes and language in writing.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Two sessions; online; no calculator | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Measurement and data (35 to 50%), operations and algebraic thinking (20 to 35%), number and operations in base ten (13 to 18%), fractions (13 to 18%), geometry (3 to 8%) |
| Grade 4 | Two sessions; online; no calculator; resource sheet | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Fractions (35 to 50%), number and operations in base ten (20 to 30%), operations and algebraic thinking (18 to 28%), measurement and data (8 to 18%), geometry (3 to 13%) |
| Grade 5 | Two sessions; online; no calculator; resource sheet | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Fractions (38 to 48%), number and operations in base ten (25 to 35%), measurement and data (15 to 25%), geometry (5 to 15%), operations and algebraic thinking (3 to 8%) |
| Grade 6 | Two sessions; online; each session has a no-calculator section, then a calculator section; resource sheet | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | The number system (30 to 45%), expressions and equations (28 to 38%), ratios and proportional relationships (13 to 18%), statistics and probability (12 to 22%), geometry (5 to 10%) |
| Grade 7 | Two sessions; online; no calculator in the first section of Session 1, calculator after that; resource sheet | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Statistics and probability (22 to 37%), geometry (18 to 28%), the number system (18 to 23%), expressions and equations (15 to 25%), ratios and proportional relationships (13 to 18%) |
| Grade 8 | Two sessions; online; no calculator in the first section of Session 1, calculator after that; resource sheet | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Expressions and equations (25 to 38%), geometry (25 to 35%), functions (22 to 32%), statistics and probability (12 to 17%), the number system (3 to 8%) |
Once students move past the break into a calculator section, they cannot go back to the no-calculator section. Where a calculator is allowed, students may use the online calculator (TI or Desmos versions) or a handheld four-function or scientific calculator. The resource sheet is available inside the test, and a clean printed copy may also be used. Scratch paper, graph paper and familiar classroom manipulatives are allowed.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | Two sessions; online; four-function calculator in the test | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Physical science (35 to 50%), earth and space science (25 to 40%), life science (20 to 35%) |
| Grade 8 | Two sessions; online; scientific calculator in the test; no graphing calculators | Untimed; about 45 to 60 minutes per session | Physical science (35 to 50%), life science (30 to 45%), earth and space science (20 to 30%) |
The science test measures the Kansas Science Standards by asking students to make sense of real-world scenarios using science and engineering practices and core science ideas.
