Maine's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, Maine students take the Maine Through Year Assessment (MTYA) in reading and math every year, plus the Maine Science Assessment in grades 5 and 8. The MTYA is given online through NWEA, adapts to each student's answers, and has no time limit. Students take it in the fall and in the spring, with an optional winter check-in, and the spring test is the one that measures how well a student meets Maine's grade-level standards. Paper forms are available for students whose IEP or 504 plan calls for them. The reading and math times below are the state's recommended scheduling times, not limits.
Reading
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Online; computer adaptive; every question tied to a reading passage; no essay or written response | Untimed; recommended about 2.5 hours in all, in 3 to 4 sessions | Literary text (45 to 50%), informational text (30 to 35%), vocabulary (20 to 25%) |
| Grade 4 | Online; computer adaptive; every question tied to a reading passage; no essay or written response | Untimed; recommended about 2.5 hours in all, in 3 to 4 sessions | Literary text (40 to 45%), informational text (35 to 40%), vocabulary (20 to 25%) |
| Grade 5 | Online; computer adaptive; every question tied to a reading passage; no essay or written response | Untimed; recommended about 2.5 hours in all, in 3 to 4 sessions | Literary text (35 to 40%), informational text (35 to 40%), vocabulary (20 to 25%) |
| Grade 6 | Online; computer adaptive; every question tied to a reading passage; no essay or written response | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 1 to 2 sessions | Literary text (35 to 40%), informational text (40 to 45%), vocabulary (20 to 25%) |
| Grades 7 and 8 | Online; computer adaptive; every question tied to a reading passage; no essay or written response | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 1 to 2 sessions | Literary text (30 to 35%), informational text (45 to 50%), vocabulary (20 to 25%) |
Maine's state test covers reading only; writing, language conventions, and speaking and listening are not tested. The fall and optional winter tests are shorter and measure growth, and only the spring test adds the part that gives a Maine scale score and achievement level.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Online; computer adaptive; no calculator; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 2 to 3 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (23 to 25%), numbers and operations (33 to 35%), measurement and data (28 to 30%), geometry (13 to 15%) |
| Grade 4 | Online; computer adaptive; no calculator; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 2 to 3 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (18 to 20%), numbers and operations (48 to 50%), measurement and data (18 to 20%), geometry (13 to 15%) |
| Grade 5 | Online; computer adaptive; no calculator; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 2 to 3 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (13 to 15%), numbers and operations (53 to 55%), measurement and data (18 to 20%), geometry (13 to 15%) |
| Grade 6 | Online; computer adaptive; on-screen basic calculator on some questions; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 1 to 2 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (25%), the real and complex number systems (45%), geometry (15%), statistics and probability (15%) |
| Grade 7 | Online; computer adaptive; on-screen basic or scientific calculator on some questions; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 1 to 2 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (20%), the real and complex number systems (40%), geometry (20%), statistics and probability (20%) |
| Grade 8 | Online; computer adaptive; on-screen basic or scientific calculator on some questions; math reference sheet | Untimed; recommended about 2 hours in all, in 1 to 2 sessions | Operations and algebraic thinking (48 to 53%), the real and complex number systems (13 to 15%), geometry (21 to 23%), statistics and probability (13 to 15%) |
The math reference sheet is available on screen to every student in the fall, winter, and spring. Every MTYA question is scored by computer; there are no written-response questions.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | Three sessions; online; same questions for every student, not adaptive; most questions grouped around a scenario; some written answers scored by people; paper form only as an accommodation | 180 minutes; three 60-minute sessions | Matter and energy in organisms and ecosystems (30%), structure and properties of matter (30%), earth's systems and space systems (40%) |
| Grade 8 | Three sessions; online; same questions for every student, not adaptive; most questions grouped around a scenario; some written answers scored by people; paper form only as an accommodation | 180 minutes; three 60-minute sessions | Physical science (33%), life science (33%), earth and space science (33%) |
The Maine Science Assessment is built on the Maine Science and Engineering Standards, which use the Next Generation Science Standards as their foundation.
