Oklahoma Practice Tests
Oklahoma Practice Books and Flashcards
Oklahoma's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, the Oklahoma School Testing Program (OSTP) covers English language arts and math every year, plus science in grades 5 and 8. The tests are taken online, and paper versions are used only for students whose accommodations call for them. Each test is split into sections, and the times below are the state's estimates for scheduling: a student who has not finished gets more time right away, as an extension of that session. Testing takes place in the last four weeks of each district's school year.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Two sections; online; multiple choice, technology-enhanced questions and short written answers | About 50 to 60 minutes per section | Reading and writing process (38 to 42%), vocabulary (22 to 26%), critical reading and writing (12 to 18%), language (12 to 18%), research (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 4 | Two sections; online; multiple choice, technology-enhanced questions and short written answers | About 50 to 60 minutes per section | Reading and writing process (30 to 34%), vocabulary (22 to 26%), critical reading and writing (18 to 22%), language (12 to 18%), research (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 5 | Two reading sections plus a separate writing section; online; one essay that draws on two passages | About 40 minutes per reading section; about 55 minutes for the writing section | Questions (90% of the score): reading and writing process (30 to 34%), critical reading and writing (22 to 26%), vocabulary (18 to 22%), language (12 to 18%), research (12 to 18%); essay (10% of the score) |
| Grade 6 | Two sections; online; multiple choice, technology-enhanced questions and short written answers | About 50 to 60 minutes per section | Reading and writing process (34 to 38%), critical reading and writing (18 to 22%), vocabulary (18 to 22%), language (12 to 18%), research (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 7 | Two sections; online; multiple choice, technology-enhanced questions and short written answers | About 50 to 60 minutes per section | Reading and writing process (34 to 38%), critical reading and writing (18 to 22%), vocabulary (14 to 20%), research (14 to 20%), language (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 8 | Two reading sections plus a separate writing section; online; one essay that draws on two passages | About 40 minutes per reading section; about 55 minutes for the writing section | Questions (88% of the score): reading and writing process (24 to 30%), critical reading and writing (24 to 30%), vocabulary (14 to 20%), language (12 to 18%), research (12 to 18%); essay (12% of the score) |
The grade 5 essay is narrative, informative or opinion writing, and the grade 8 essay is narrative, informative or argumentative writing. The writing section may be given on a different day from the reading sections. In grade 3, the reading comprehension and vocabulary results are used to determine a student's status under Oklahoma's Reading Sufficiency Act.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Two sections; online; no calculator; no formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Number and operations (44 to 48%), geometry and measurement (22 to 26%), algebraic reasoning and algebra (12 to 18%), data and probability (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 4 | Two sections; online; no calculator; no formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Number and operations (42 to 46%), geometry and measurement (24 to 28%), algebraic reasoning and algebra (12 to 18%), data and probability (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 5 | Two sections; online; no calculator; no formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Number and operations (42 to 46%), geometry and measurement (22 to 26%), algebraic reasoning and algebra (14 to 20%), data and probability (12 to 18%) |
| Grade 6 | Two sections; online; four-function calculator; formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Number and operations (38 to 42%), geometry and measurement (22 to 26%), algebraic reasoning and algebra (20 to 24%), data and probability (12 to 16%) |
| Grade 7 | Two sections; online; four-function calculator; formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Geometry and measurement (30 to 36%), algebraic reasoning and algebra (26 to 30%), data and probability (18 to 24%), number and operations (16 to 20%) |
| Grade 8 | Two sections; online; scientific calculator; formula sheet | About 40 minutes per section | Algebraic reasoning and algebra (44 to 48%), geometry and measurement (18 to 22%), number and operations (16 to 20%), data and probability (14 to 18%) |
Questions are multiple choice and technology-enhanced, and some are linked to a shared stimulus. In grades 6 to 8 a calculator is built into the online test, and students may also use their own if it meets Oklahoma's calculator policy. In grades 3 to 5 a calculator is allowed only as an accommodation in a student's IEP or 504 plan.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | Two sections; online; no calculator; questions in clusters built around a shared scenario | About 45 to 55 minutes per section | Earth and space sciences (33 to 40%), physical sciences (27 to 33%), life sciences (27 to 33%) |
| Grade 8 | Two sections; online; scientific calculator; questions in clusters built around a shared scenario | About 50 to 60 minutes per section | Life sciences (40 to 46%), physical sciences (33 to 40%), earth and space sciences (21 to 27%) |
Each cluster is a set of questions linked to one scenario: three multiple-choice questions, or two multiple-choice questions and a technology-enhanced question, all tied to a single science standard.
