Oregon's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) covers English language arts and math every year, plus science in grades 5 and 8. Every test is given online and includes a computer adaptive part, where the questions adjust to how a student is answering. ELA and math each come in two parts, an adaptive test and a performance task, and the state recommends giving the two parts on separate days. The tests are not timed: students may take as much time as they need, and the times below are the state's scheduling estimates for most students. Testing takes place in the spring.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4 and 5 | Two parts, a computer adaptive test and a performance task; online; listening questions with headphones; one research-based opinion or informational essay in the performance task | Untimed; about 1 hour 10 minutes for the adaptive test and 2 hours 30 minutes for the performance task | Reading literary and informational texts, writing, listening, and research |
| Grades 6, 7 and 8 | Two parts, a computer adaptive test and a performance task; online; listening questions with headphones; one research-based argumentative or explanatory essay in the performance task | Untimed; about 1 hour 5 minutes for the adaptive test and 1 hour 55 minutes for the performance task | Reading literary and informational texts, writing, listening, and research |
The performance task has two parts, best given on separate days: in Part 1 students read sources and answer one research question, and in Part 2 they write the full essay using those sources. Students receive an overall ELA score plus separate reading and writing scores.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4 and 5 | Two parts, a computer adaptive test and a performance task; online; no calculator | Untimed; about 55 minutes for the adaptive test and 50 minutes for the performance task | Concepts and procedures; problem solving, modeling and data analysis; communicating reasoning |
| Grades 6, 7 and 8 | Two parts, a computer adaptive test and a performance task; online; on-screen calculator on calculator-allowed questions only | Untimed; about 50 minutes for the adaptive test and 40 minutes for the performance task | Concepts and procedures; problem solving, modeling and data analysis; communicating reasoning |
The math performance task is a set of problem-solving questions built around one real-world context, and it is given in one session. The adaptive test is given before the performance task.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | One computer adaptive test; online; question clusters built around a science phenomenon, plus standalone questions; on-screen calculator on every question | Untimed; about 1 hour 15 minutes | Physical science, life science, and earth and space science, with every question also using science practices and crosscutting concepts |
| Grade 8 | One computer adaptive test; online; question clusters built around a science phenomenon, plus standalone questions; on-screen calculator on every question; periodic table | Untimed; about 1 hour 10 minutes | Physical science, life science, and earth and space science, with every question also using science practices and crosscutting concepts |
The grade 5 test covers the science standards for grades 3, 4 and 5, and the grade 8 test covers the middle school standards for grades 6 to 8. Once a student starts the science test, it must be finished within 20 calendar days.
