South Dakota's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, South Dakota's state tests cover English language arts and math every year, plus science in grades 5 and 8. The tests are given online, and paper versions, including large print and braille, are available for students who cannot use a computer or who have a visual impairment. None of the tests is timed, so the times below are the state's estimates for scheduling. The ELA and math tests are the Smarter Balanced assessments, and each comes in two parts, a computer-adaptive test and a performance task; the state recommends giving the two parts on separate days, starting with the adaptive test. Testing takes place in the spring.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 | Online; two parts: a computer-adaptive test with listening questions, and a performance task in two parts that ends with a full essay | Untimed; about 3 hours 30 minutes in all (about 1 hour 30 minutes for the adaptive test and 2 hours for the performance task) | Reading, writing, listening, and research |
The full essay is written in Part 2 of the performance task. The state recommends giving Part 1 in one session and Part 2 on the next school day, with enough time to finish the essay in one sitting.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grades 3, 4 and 5 | Online; two parts: a computer-adaptive test and a performance task; no calculator | Untimed; about 2 hours 30 minutes in all (about 1 hour 30 minutes for the adaptive test and 1 hour for the performance task) | Concepts and procedures; problem solving and modeling and data analysis; communicating reasoning |
| Grades 6, 7 and 8 | Online; two parts: a computer-adaptive test and a performance task; on-screen calculator in one section of the adaptive test and on the performance task | Untimed; about 3 hours in all (about 2 hours for the adaptive test and 1 hour for the performance task) | Concepts and procedures; problem solving and modeling and data analysis; communicating reasoning |
The adaptive test is individualized for each student. The performance task is a set of questions built around one real-world scenario, and the state recommends giving it in one session.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | Online; computer-adaptive; item clusters built around a science phenomenon, plus stand-alone items; on-screen calculator | Untimed; about 1 hour 43 minutes | Physical science, life science, and earth and space science, in equal parts |
| Grade 8 | Online; computer-adaptive; item clusters built around a science phenomenon, plus stand-alone items; on-screen calculator; periodic table | Untimed; about 1 hour 36 minutes | Physical science, life science, and earth and space science, in equal parts |
The grade 5 test covers the science standards for grades 3 to 5, and the grade 8 test covers grades 6 to 8. The state recommends giving the science test in one session of 90 to 120 minutes.
