About this book
Give your fourth grader the confidence to succeed on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) English Language Arts test.
This book contains five full-length practice tests — 190 questions total — aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for English Language Arts and designed to match the format, difficulty, and content of the real Grade 4 IAR ELA exam.
Take a look inside

- Delivery: the IAR is given each spring to every public-school student in Grades 3–8, overseen by the Illinois State Board of Education and delivered online by Pearson.
- Format: the Grade 4 ELA test comes in two units of about 90 minutes each, and each unit pairs reading with one written response: Unit 1 a Literary Analysis Task on two related stories, Unit 2 a Research Simulation Task on a set of sources.
- Each practice test here: each test is built to that shape.
So a practice sitting asks for the same reading, the same essay, and the same stamina as test day.
What’s inside
- 5 complete 38-question practice tests (190 questions total), each in two units with an essay in each
- A Literary Analysis Task and a Research Simulation Task in every test — the two writing tasks the real exam is organized around, each with a sample top-score answer and the scoring rubric
- Genuine multi-source research sets: three sources on one subject, with questions that require reading across them rather than inside just one
- Literary passages that include a poem and a short play, so students meet drama and verse before test day rather than on it
- Two-part evidence questions (Part A asks what is true, Part B asks for the proving sentence), choose-two, table, sorting, and vocabulary-in-context items
- Detailed answer explanations for every question — not just the correct letter, but the text evidence and the misreading that makes a wrong answer tempting
- Balanced practice across all five reporting categories, at roughly the real test’s 60% reading / 40% writing split
- Passages, characters, and question types varied across all five tests
- A parent letter with test-taking tips, plus a Grade 4 ELA Study Reference for use while studying
- A quick-reference answer key for all five tests for fast scoring

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by experienced educators who study Illinois’s official IAR specifications, evidence statements, and released item samplers
- Every question mirrors what students will see on test day — no surprises in format, content, or rigor
- Explanations teach the “why,” not just the “what,” so students learn from every mistake
- Both essays come with sample answers and the printed rubric, so a parent can score writing with confidence
