About this book
Give your fifth grader the confidence to succeed on Arizona's Science Test (AzSCI) for Grade 5.
This Smart Stars practice book provides five full-length, AzSCI-aligned practice tests, each with 66 items that mirror the operational length and item mix of the real AzSCI Grade 5 form. Every test was written by experienced educators, reviewed for accuracy, and built around the 2018 Arizona Science Standards.
Take a look inside
AzSCI is a grade-band assessment, so the Grade 5 form draws from the Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5 standards (approximately 60% Grade 5, 20% Grade 4, and 20% Grade 3 content).
- Delivery: administered on the Pearson TestNav platform.
- Format: three untimed test units of roughly 20 items each, with a significant break between units.
- Each practice test here: this Smart Stars book mirrors that structure exactly — 66 items split across three Test Units of 22 items that combine phenomenon-anchored 3-to-5-item clusters with stand-alone items, just as students see on test day.
- Field-test items: each test includes the unscored field-test-style items that appear on the actual AzSCI form, so the practice mirrors the true on-screen length and helps your child build real test-day endurance.
What’s inside
- Five full-length practice tests of 66 items each, with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- Coverage of every Grade 3, Grade 4, and Grade 5 standard from the 2018 Arizona Science Standards across the three AzSCI reporting categories: Physical Science (40-48%), Life Science (28-36%), and Earth & Space Science (20-28%) — with Engineering integrated throughout
- Three-dimensional items (Disciplinary Core Idea + Science & Engineering Practice + Crosscutting Concept) plus multiple phenomenon-anchored clusters per test, modeled on the real AzSCI format
- A variety of question formats — multiple choice, multi-select, two-part questions, drag-and-drop matching, gap-match tables, and inline-choice items — translated faithfully into a print equivalent of every TestNav form
- Every explanation includes a labeled Strategy and Tip so students learn the underlying reasoning, not just the answer
- A combined Quick Answer Key at the back, a parent letter, and a test-taking tips section
- Practice matches official AzSCI Grade 5 policy: Desmos four-function calculator allowed, NO periodic table, NO formula reference sheet
Topics covered
- Particle nature of matter and conservation of matter in closed systems
- Mixing substances — physical mixing versus chemical change
- Balanced and unbalanced forces, friction, and motion
- Non-contact forces: gravity, magnetism, and static electric forces
- Earth’s gravity pulling objects toward the planet’s center
- Light and sound waves transferring energy through air and other materials
- Energy transfer through electric circuits and through everyday collisions
- Plants build their bodies mostly from air, water, and sunlight
- Ecosystem food chains and webs — producers, consumers, and decomposers
- Inherited traits versus traits shaped by environment and behavior
- Adaptation, extinction, and how habitat change reshapes populations
- Earth’s daily rotation (day/night, shadows) and yearly orbit on a tilted axis (seasons, daylight hours, eclipses)
- Earth-Moon-Sun motions and Moon-phase patterns
- Fossils as evidence of past environments and long-term Earth-surface change
- Earth’s four spheres — atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere — and how they interact
- Designing fair tests and engineering solutions to real-world problems
Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Educator-authored: Every question is written and reviewed by classroom-experienced educators.
- Mirrors test day: Each practice test matches the official AzSCI structure, item count (66 items split into three untimed units), and tool policy (Desmos four-function calculator, no periodic table, no reference sheet at Grade 5).
- Varied across five tests: Slot positions, phenomena, contexts, and number choices rotate test-to-test so no two tests feel like the same practice run.
- Field-test items built in: Each practice test includes unscored items that mirror AzSCI’s real field-test load, building true test-day endurance.
