Arizona Practice Tests
Arizona Practice Books and Flashcards
Arizona's State Tests at a Glance
In grades 3 through 8, Arizona's Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) covers English language arts and math every year, and Arizona's Science Test (AzSCI) covers science in grades 5 and 8. Each test is split into units, and the units are untimed; the one exception is the grade 3 oral reading fluency items, which are timed. Schools give AASA online or on paper; AzSCI is given online, with special paper versions such as large print also available.
English Language Arts
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Four units: a writing unit (one essay, informative or opinion), two reading and language units and an oral reading fluency unit; online or paper; writing comes first, on its own day; oral reading fluency is read aloud online, in small groups | Untimed, except oral reading fluency (one timed minute per passage); state estimates: writing 60 to 90 minutes, each reading unit 45 to 75 minutes, oral reading fluency about 30 minutes | Reading literature, reading informational text, writing and language (an essay plus language questions), and oral reading fluency |
| Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 | Three units: a writing unit (one essay, informative or opinion in grades 4 and 5, informative or argumentative in grades 6 to 8) and two reading and language units; online or paper; writing comes first, on its own day | Untimed; state estimates: writing 60 to 90 minutes, each reading unit 45 to 75 minutes | Reading literature, reading informational text, writing and language (an essay plus language questions) |
The grade 3 oral reading fluency unit counts in the grade 3 ELA score and in Arizona's Move On When Reading indicator. The online writing unit has a built-in dictionary and thesaurus.
Mathematics
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 3 | Two units; no calculator; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Operations and algebraic thinking with numbers in base ten (49 to 53%), fractions (18 to 22%), measurement and data with geometry (26 to 30%) |
| Grade 4 | Two units; no calculator; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Operations and algebraic thinking with numbers in base ten (46 to 54%), fractions (29 to 33%), measurement and data with geometry (15 to 19%) |
| Grade 5 | Two units; no calculator; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Operations and algebraic thinking with numbers in base ten (38 to 42%), fractions (31 to 35%), measurement and data with geometry (24 to 28%) |
| Grade 6 | Two units; no calculator; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Ratios and proportions (19 to 23%), expressions and equations (29 to 33%), geometry with statistics and probability (15 to 19%), the number system (28 to 32%) |
| Grade 7 | Two units; scientific calculator in Unit 1 only, built into the online test; no calculator in Unit 2; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Ratios and proportions (19 to 23%), the number system (19 to 23%), expressions and equations (23 to 27%), geometry with statistics and probability (27 to 35%) |
| Grade 8 | Two units; scientific calculator in Unit 1 only, built into the online test; no calculator in Unit 2; no reference sheet; online or paper | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 85 minutes per unit | Functions (21 to 25%), expressions and equations (29 to 33%), geometry (17 to 21%), statistics and probability with the number system (19 to 27%) |
Schools may give no more than two reading or math units in one day, with a break of at least 15 minutes between them.
Science
| Grade | Format | Time | What’s tested |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 5 | Three units; online; four-function calculator built into the test | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 90 minutes per unit | Physical sciences (40 to 48%), life sciences (28 to 36%), earth and space sciences (20 to 28%), using standards from grades 3, 4 and 5 |
| Grade 8 | Three units; online; scientific calculator and periodic table built into the test | Untimed; state estimate 60 to 90 minutes per unit | Physical sciences (36 to 44%), life sciences (30 to 38%), earth and space sciences (22 to 30%), using standards from grades 6, 7 and 8 |
AzSCI is a grade band test: about 60% of the items come from the tested grade's standards and about 20% from each of the two grades before it. Each category blends science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts with that area of science.
