Give your third grader the confidence to succeed on the Wyoming WY-TOPP Grade 3 Math test.
This Smart Stars practice book provides five full-length, standards-aligned practice tests that mirror the item mix, question emphasis, and no-calculator format of the real WY-TOPP assessment in Mathematics. Every question was written by experienced educators, reviewed for accuracy, and built around the 2023 Wyoming Mathematics Content and Performance Standards at Grade 3: the standards Wyoming built the current WY-TOPP test on: so the topics and emphasis match what Wyoming students actually see.
WY-TOPP (the Wyoming Test of Proficiency and Progress) is the test the Wyoming Department of Education gives to every public-school student in Grades 3-10. It is an untimed, computer-adaptive test taken online, and the spring administration is the one that counts toward grade-level results. The Grade 3 math test uses no calculator and no reference sheet. Because it is adaptive, a student answers only about 20 to 24 questions, chosen by the computer to match their level, with a few unscored field-test questions mixed in invisibly. On the real test students click, drag, type, and plot; this book renders those same skills as clear, print-friendly multiple choice, with the same number lines, line plots, area grids, fraction models, and quadrilateral figures, so the thinking is identical even though the answering is on paper. Each practice test here is a fuller, fixed version of that experience: 24 scored-style questions plus 8 field-test-style questions, 32 in all, for 160 questions across the book: so students get more practice than a single adaptive session while keeping the real test’s balance of skills.
What’s inside
- Five full-length practice tests, with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- Coverage of every Grade 3 math area on the WY-TOPP blueprint (Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base Ten, Fractions, Measurement & Data, and Geometry) weighted toward the Fractions work that carries the most questions, just like the real blueprint
- Field-test-style questions blended invisibly into each test, just like the real WY-TOPP, and fully answered here so nothing on test day feels unfamiliar
- Figure-based practice rendered for paper: number lines, line plots marked in halves and fourths of an inch, area grids and area models, fraction bars and circles, and quadrilateral figures
- Every explanation walks through the reasoning step by step and ends with a labeled Tip, Check, or Estimate (with a Strategy on the multi-step questions), so students learn the move, not just the answer
- A Quick Answer Key after each test for fast self-grading
- A family letter, a test-taking tips section, and a Grade 3 math study reference page up front: included as a study aid, since the real WY-TOPP provides no reference sheet at Grade 3
- No-calculator practice throughout, matching the official WY-TOPP Grade 3 policy
No calculator and no reference sheet. The real Grade 3 test provides neither, so students practice exactly as they will test: with only pencil, paper, and what they have learned. An inch ruler is helpful for the line-plot and measurement questions.
Topics covered
- Multiplying and dividing within 100 fluently, and the way multiplication and division undo each other
- Two-step word problems using the four operations, writing equations with a symbol for the unknown, and judging whether an answer is reasonable by rounding and estimating
- Adding and subtracting whole numbers within 1,000, with and without regrouping
- Fractions as numbers: unit fractions, fractions on a number line, equivalent fractions, whole numbers written as fractions, and comparing and ordering fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator (halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths)
- Sorting and classifying quadrilaterals (squares, rectangles, and rhombuses) and reasoning about their attributes
- Area of a rectangle by counting unit squares and by multiplying side lengths, including breaking a rectangle apart (the distributive strategy) and composite L-shaped figures
- Measuring length to the nearest half inch and quarter inch, and reading and building line plots
- Analyzing line-plot data to answer “how many more,” combine-and-compare, and multi-step questions
Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Educator-authored. Every question is written and reviewed by classroom-experienced educators.
- Mirrors test day. Each practice test matches the WY-TOPP item mix, question emphasis, and no-calculator, no-reference-sheet policy, with field-test questions blended in invisibly just like the real test.
- Built for Wyoming. Aligned to the 2023 Wyoming Mathematics Content and Performance Standards at Grade 3, with grade-appropriate real-world contexts and a diverse cast of student names.
- Explanations teach the why. Every Answers and Explanations entry shows the full worked solution, then a labeled closing Tip, Check, or Estimate (and a Strategy on multi-step problems) so students learn the reasoning.
- Varied and graduated. Slot positions, contexts, names, and number choices rotate test-to-test, and the five tests step up in difficulty: the later tests lean on more multi-step reasoning, fraction ordering, and two-step line-plot and area problems: so no two feel like the same practice run.
