Give your fourth grader the confidence to succeed on the New York State Grade 4 Math test.
This Smart Stars practice book provides five full-length, standards-aligned practice tests that mirror the length, item mix, and question types of the real New York State Testing Program (NYSTP) assessment in Mathematics.
Take a look inside

Every question was written by experienced educators, reviewed for accuracy, and built around the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards at Grade 4 — New York’s own revised standards, not the Common Core — so the topics and emphasis match what New York students actually see.
The NYSTP — the New York State Testing Program — is the test the New York State Education Department gives to every public-school student in Grades 3-8.
- Delivery: delivered on computer by NWEA, with paper forms available as an accommodation.
- Format: untimed — students get as much time as they need within the regular school day (New York estimates about 65 to 75 minutes per session for Grade 4) — and the Grade 4 math test is given in two sessions on two different days.
- Question types: Session 1 is all multiple choice, and Session 2 adds constructed-response questions worth 1, 2, or 3 credits, where students write out the answer and often show their work.
- Length: a student answers 44 questions in all, with a few embedded field-test questions mixed in invisibly that do not count toward the score.
- Each practice test here: 44 questions in two sessions, for 220 questions across the book — to build true test-day endurance.
What’s inside
- Five full-length practice tests, with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- Coverage of every Grade 4 math area New York reports — Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Number and Operations with Fractions, Measurement and Data, and Geometry — weighted toward the multi-digit computation and fraction work that carries the most questions, just like the real blueprint
- Field-test-style questions blended invisibly into each test, just like the real NYSTP, and fully answered here so nothing on test day feels unfamiliar
- Practice in both NYSTP item formats: single-answer multiple choice and constructed-response worth 1, 2, and 3 credits (show-your-work and explain-your-thinking), plus number lines, line plots, area models, protractor angle measures, and figure-based geometry
- A combined Quick Answer Key after each test for fast self-grading
- A family letter, a test-taking tips section, and a Grade 4 math study reference page up front — included as a study aid, since the real NYSTP provides no reference sheet until Grade 5
- No-calculator practice throughout, matching the official NYSTP Grade 3-5 policy

Topics covered
- Place value, and reading, writing, comparing, and rounding whole numbers up to 1,000,000, including standard and expanded form
- Adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers with regrouping, and multistep word problems
- Multiplying up to four-digit by one-digit and two-digit by two-digit numbers, and dividing with remainders, using area models, partial products, and place value
- “Times as many” multiplicative comparison, multistep problems, factors and multiples, prime and composite numbers, and number and shape patterns
- Equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators, and multiplying a whole number by a fraction
- Points, lines, rays, and parallel and perpendicular lines; classifying triangles by their angles and classifying quadrilaterals; and identifying lines of symmetry
- Measuring and drawing angles with a protractor, additive angle measure, and finding an unknown angle
- Area and perimeter of rectangles, including finding an unknown side and composite (L-shaped) figures
- Line plots marked in halves, quarters, and eighths of a unit
- Reading and interpreting data to answer “how many more,” combine-and-compare, and two-part questions

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Educator-authored: Every question is written and reviewed by classroom-experienced educators.
- Mirrors test day: Each practice test matches the official NYSTP shape, two-session structure, item mix, and no-calculator, no-reference-sheet policy, with field-test questions blended in invisibly just like the real test.
- Built for New York: Aligned to the New York State Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards at Grade 4 — New York’s own standards, not the Common Core — with grade-appropriate real-world contexts and a diverse cast of student names.
- Explanations teach the why: Every Answers and Explanations entry shows the full worked solution, then a labeled closing Tip, Check, or Estimate (and a Strategy on multi-step problems) so students learn the reasoning.
- Varied and graduated: Slot positions, contexts, names, and number choices rotate test-to-test, and the five tests step up in difficulty — the later tests lean on more multi-step and constructed-response reasoning — so no two feel like the same practice run.
