Give your fifth grader the confidence to succeed on all three New York State tests — Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Science — in one book.
This Smart Stars combined edition brings together fifteen full-length practice tests — five Mathematics, five English Language Arts, and five Science — that mirror the length, item mix, and question types of the real New York State Testing Program (NYSTP) assessments. Every question and passage was written and reviewed by experienced educators.
Please note: the practice tests in this volume are the same tests offered in our three individual Grade 5 titles, *Smart Stars New York Grade 5 Mathematics*, *Smart Stars New York Grade 5 English Language Arts*, and *Smart Stars New York Grade 5 Science*. This combined edition exists to save families money on the set — if you already own all three individual books, it does not add new practice tests.
Grade 5 is the year all three subjects are tested. NYSTP is New York’s own state test, given each spring to students in Grades 3–8 in English language arts and mathematics — and in science at grades 5 and 8 only. That makes Grade 5 one of the few years a New York student sits all three, and this volume covers the full year in one book. It is overseen by the New York State Education Department and taken on a computer through the Nextera Test Delivery System.
What’s inside
- Fifteen full-length practice tests: five Mathematics (44 questions each), five English Language Arts (39 questions each), and five Science (35 questions each), 590 questions in all — with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- True to the real Grade 5 Math test: 44 questions across two sessions given on two days, no calculator in either session, and a ruler and protractor available
- A Grade 5 Math Study Reference — Grade 5 is the first year New York hands students a mathematics reference sheet, and they receive it for both sessions, so this page reflects something your student really will have on test day
- True to the real Grade 5 ELA test: seven reading selections per test, multiple-choice questions, short-response questions worth 2 credits, and an extended-response question worth 4 credits comparing two texts
- True to the real Elementary-level Science Test: every question sits inside a cluster — a short science story with setup, then tables, graphs, and models arriving one at a time between the questions — given in one untimed sitting, with the state planning about 90 minutes
- Detailed answer explanations for every question, so students learn *why* an answer is correct
How to use this book: take one test at a time in a quiet space and work through it in one sitting. Score it with that subject’s Quick Answer Key at the back, then read every explanation, including for questions answered correctly.
Topics covered
Mathematics — fractions with unlike denominators, multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, dividing with unit fractions; place value to thousandths, powers of ten, decimals; measurement conversion, line plots, and volume.
English Language Arts — main ideas and details; character, theme, and point of view; inference from evidence; vocabulary in context; author’s purpose and text structure; comparing two texts; and written response.
Science — forces and motion, energy, waves, and properties of matter; weather and climate, patterns in the sky, Earth’s water, weathering and erosion, natural hazards and resources; plant and animal structures, inherited traits, fossils, food webs, and where a plant’s material comes from.
A note on the science reference page: a *Grade 5 Science Study Reference* opens the Science section as a study aid. On the real test a Grade 5 student receives no science reference sheet — what they get on screen is a four-function calculator, a ruler, and a protractor — so use that page while learning and set it aside during each practice test.
