This book holds four flashcard decks: 140 cards written to the seven content statements of Ohio’s Learning Standards for Science for Grade 5. Every card is a new item, not a reprint of the Smart Stars practice-test book. Read the front, answer in your head, then turn the page to flip it. (A real form carries about 45 scored questions in two parts of about 75 minutes each. Life Science and Physical Science each carry 32 to 40 percent of the points and Earth and Space Science 25 to 32 percent; the cards follow the same split: 52, 48, and 40.)

What’s inside
- Four color-coded decks of 35 cards each: Like Test Day (test-style questions), Key Concepts (one science idea per card), Vocabulary (the terms the test uses), and Trouble Spots (the ideas Ohio’s standards single out as easy to confuse)
- Like Test Day cards written the way the OST asks them, with figures, tables, and data
- Key Concepts cards that ask your child to explain an idea, then show the principle and one worked example
- Vocabulary cards that define each term in the language the test uses
- Trouble Spots cards whose wrong choices are the exact mix-ups students make
- The answer on the very next page: the correct answer, a worked explanation in plain language, and a Tip that names the mistake behind the wrong choices
- The Ohio content statement each card tests, printed on the back word for word, so a parent sees which standard a missed card belongs to
- Each deck in its own color on every page; the amber box is always a Tip
- A letter to families on how the test is built and scored, with test-taking tips
- A Study Reference that prints all seven content statements
- A Quick Answer Key for the two question decks

Topics covered
- The solar system: the sun, everything that orbits it, and what makes each planet different
- The sun as one star among many, and why a closer, dimmer star can look brighter
- Earth’s rotation and revolution: day and night, the seasons, moon phases, and changing shadows
- Forces as pushes and pulls, and how a change in motion depends on mass and force
- Balanced and unbalanced forces, friction, and gravity
- Light: straight-line travel, reflection, refraction, absorption, and why we see color
- Sound: vibration, why it needs a material to travel through, pitch, and loudness
- Producers, consumers, decomposers, predators, prey, and partners in an ecosystem
- Food chains and food webs, and what happens when one organism is removed
- Where living things get energy, how plants make food, and why less energy passes along each step of a food chain

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by experienced educators who study Ohio’s official test specifications and content elaborations
- Every card names its content statement, so study time goes to the standards a student is actually missing
- Explanations teach the “why,” not just the “what,” so students learn from every card, even the ones they got right
- Four ways to study the same seven standards instead of one worksheet format repeated
- All 140 cards are original items, never repeated from the practice-test book

How to use this book
Work through one deck in order the first time; after that, jump to any deck from the table of contents. Answer before turning the page, then read the back even when you were right. Start with Like Test Day and save Trouble Spots for last; expect those to feel a little harder. Ten to fifteen cards a day over several weeks beats one long sitting.

The four decks
- Like Test Day (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question written to the Grade 5 Science portion of Ohio’s State Tests (OST).
- Key Concepts (35 cards): Each card asks you to explain one science idea from the Grade 5 Science portion of Ohio’s State Tests (OST).
- Vocabulary (35 cards): Each card shows one science term that appears in the Grade 5 Science portion of Ohio’s State Tests (OST).
- Trouble Spots (35 cards): Each card is a test-style question built around an idea that Ohio’s Grade 5 science standards single out as easy to confuse.
How the cards work
Read the front of a card, answer it in your head, then turn the page to flip it. The answer card shows the correct answer, a worked explanation, a Tip naming the mistake behind the wrong choices, and the exact Ohio content statement the card tests.
Color code. Each deck has its own color on every card, so you always know which deck you are in. The amber box is always a Tip.
Pair it with the practice tests
Ohio OST Grade 5 Science Practice Tests
Work through full-length practice tests in the same test format, then use these cards to review what each test turns up.
