Give your fourth grader the confidence to succeed on both Ohio's State Test (OST) assessments — Mathematics and English Language Arts — in one book.
This Smart Stars combined edition brings together ten full-length, standards-aligned practice tests — five in Mathematics and five in English Language Arts — that mirror the length, item mix, and question types of the real OST assessments. Every question and passage was written by experienced educators, reviewed for accuracy, and built around Ohio’s Learning Standards at Grade 4.
Take a look inside

The OST — Ohio’s State Test — is the state assessment Ohio gives students each spring, delivered online through the state’s test platform. This book renders the same skills as clear, print-friendly items — the same figures, protractors, graphs, fraction models, and reading-passage sets — so the thinking is identical even on paper.
On test day: Ohio gives the Grade 4 Mathematics test in two Parts of about 75 minutes each with a short break between them, and no calculator.
What’s inside
- Ten full-length practice tests — five Mathematics (54 questions each, in two Parts) and five English Language Arts (original passages plus one passage-based written-response prompt each) — with detailed Answers and Explanations after every test
- Every OST item format, rendered for paper: single-answer multiple choice, multiple select (“select two”), type-in and gridded-response items, two-part evidence-based items, and inline table/sort items — across both subjects
- A reference sheet at the front of every Math test with the same metric conversions and prefix chart students see on the on-screen OST tool
- A Grade 4 ELA Study Reference — question-type guide, reading moves, the written-response rubric, and a glossary — for review between sessions
- Family-friendly extras: a parent letter with test-taking tips for both subjects, a note that Math angle items need a physical protractor, and a separate Quick Answer Key for each subject
Topics covered
- Place value, the 10-times relationship, and rounding multi-digit whole numbers through 1,000,000
- Multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication (up to 4-by-1 and 2-by-2), and division with remainders
- Multiplicative comparison, factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, and number/shape patterns
- Equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, adding and subtracting like-denominator fractions and mixed numbers, and multiplying a fraction by a whole number
- Decimal notation for tenths and hundredths; money, time and elapsed time, and metric measurement
- Area and perimeter, line plots, angle measurement with a protractor, additive angle measure, and classifying two-dimensional figures
Skills covered — English Language Arts
- Main idea, theme, and summary; citing text evidence for explicit statements and inferences
- Character, setting, and event analysis in literary text
- Word meaning from context, figurative language, and academic vocabulary
- How reasons and evidence support points in informational text
- Comparing and contrasting across two passages; text structure, point of view, and author’s purpose
- Integrating information from text features; producing an organized, evidence-based written response

Why parents and teachers choose Smart Stars
- Written by experienced educators who study Ohio’s official OST specifications and released items
- Every Math figure and every reading passage is original; every item mirrors test day — no surprises in format, content, or rigor
- Explanations teach the “why,” not just the “what” — Math items end with a labeled Strategy/Tip line, and ELA items point to the exact text evidence
- Item types, contexts, and passages varied across all ten tests, so no question feels recycled
- Difficulty ramps gently across each five-test set, so the book is also a study path, not ten identical run-throughs
